Specifications for Third Year Preparatory Certificate Examination 2009-2010

A Language Functions (7 Marks)
1-Finish the following dialogue3 Marks)
A dialogue with three (3) deletions is provided. The students are asked to fill lit the deletions with the correct language forms, related to those in the set books. The situation in which the dialogue takes place is described briefly, but clearly. The first exchange should be in full. (One mark each)
2-Write what you would say in each of the following situations: (4 Marks)
Four (4) situations are described, briefly but clearly. Students are asked to write what they would say in each situation. (One mark each)
B Reading Comprehension(14 Marks)
3- Read and match: (5Marks)
Students are asked to match five (5) parts of sentences, meanings, opposites or questions and answers, based on the material in the Set Books. (5items in column A and 6 items in column (Half a mark each)
4- Read the following, then answer the questions: (9 Marks)
A text (unseen in the Set Books) of about one hundred and twenty (120) words is provided.
This can be a short story, a factual text, a table or a letter. Most lexical items and all structures in the text should be from the Set Books.
The students are required to answer three (3) open-ended questions and three (3) multiple-choice questions with four (4) options each. These questions should test the following reading comprehension skills:
* extracting information * giving the main idea
* understanding reference * guessing the meaning of vocabulary in context
(One and a half marks for each question).
C-Usage & Writing (13 Marks)
5- Choose the correct answer from a. b. c or (4 Marks)
Eight ( varied multiple-choice items (4 vocabulary & 4 structure) based on the Set Books are provided. The students are asked to choose the ‘correct answer from the four (4) options given. (Half a mark each)
7-Read and correct the underlined words: (4 marks)
Four (4) sentences, with an underlined error in each, are provided. Students are required to correct the error in each sentence. All lexical items and structures should be from the Set Books.
8-a-Write a paragraph of five (5) sentences on: (5Marks)
Students are asked to write a paragraph of five (5) sentences using the information given
in a table , form, key words, guiding points or instructions. (One mark each) OR
b-Write a letter / an e-mail to....
Students are asked to write a friendly or family letter or an e-mail using the information provided.
D- The Reader (6 Marks)
9- a Answer the following questions : (2 open-ended questions) (4 Marks)
Students are asked to answer 1 open-ended question. (4 marks each)
b Complete the following to make meaningful sentences: (Two completion items)
Students are asked to answer 1 question only. (2 Marks)
( Total : 40 ÷ 2 = 20 Marks for each term )
